Important Notes : Adjective



Adjective- An adjective is a word that is used to qualify a noun or pronoun.

Ex. Mukesh is a good person.

     He is intelligent.

In the above sentences, good and intelligent are adjectives which are qualifying ‘Mukesh’ and ‘He’.


Kinds of Adjectives

1. Adjectives of quality:- Tall, short, good, bad, ugly, beautiful, red, green, short, black, honest, etc.

Ex. Sanjay is an honest person. 

2. Adjectives of quantity:- Enough, some, little, any, whole, sufficient, most, etc.

Ex. I don’t have enough money to lend you.

3. Possessive Adjectives:- My, our, his, your, their, her, its, one’s.

Ex. My friend Rohit, is a doctor in PGI.

4. Adjectives of number:- Few, various, all, whole, several, some, etc.

Ex. A few people of this family are making too much money.

5. Proper Adjective:- American, Chinese, Indian, Russian, etc.

Ex. Some Indians have been living in America for 20 years.

6. Distributive Adjectives:- Each, every, either, neither.

Ex. Every citizen of India deserve happiness.

7. Demonstrative Adjectives:- These, those, this, that, the same, certain, a certain, any other, other, others, such, some, etc.

Ex. These girls are beautiful can apply for the post of Air hostess.

8. Interrogative Adjectives:- What, which, whose, etc.

Ex. Whose brother is working in MNC?

9. Emphatic Adjective:- Own, very.

Ex. This is my own car.

10. Exclamatory Adjective:- What.

Ex. What a big building it is!

SPECIAL RULES

1. Some:- Used for positive things.

Ex. He has some money.

2. Enough:- Used just before a noun 

Ex. There is enough water in the bottle.

3. Any:- Used for negative things

Ex. He does not have any money.

4. Senior, junior, superior, inferior, prefer, prior, elder take “to” preposition after them.

Ex. He is junior to me.

5. Farther and further 

Farther - Distance

Further - Next in series

Ex. Call here for further enquiry.

Delhi is farther from Lucknow.

6. Much and many

Much - Uncountable Noun

Many - Plural countable noun

Ex. I have much sugar. You can take it from me.

Many students came to attend the seminar.

Degrees of Comparison:

Positive Comparative Superlative

1. Good Better Best 

2. Great Greater Greatest 

3. Small Smaller Smallest 

4. Short Shorter Shortest 

5. Wise Wiser Wisest 

6. Hot Hotter Hottest 

7. Beautiful More beautiful Most beautiful

8. Bad Worse Worst 

9. Much More most 

10. Many More Most 

SPECIAL RULES FOR DEGREE

1. Comparative degree is used in comparing two things or person.

Ex. He is the better of the two boys.

Note:- Generally we use ‘the’ with superlative degree but when we have ‘of the two’ with comparative form of adjective, the follows it. (comparative degree)

2. Superlative degree is used in comparing more than two things or person.

Ex. Uttar Pradesh is the biggest state in India.

3. Don’t use more and most with following adjectives-major, minor, unique, ideal, perfect, extreme, complete, universal, infinite, entire, round, circular, impossible, perpetual, etc.

Ex. It is the most unique temple which I have ever visited. (Incorrect)

It is the unique temple which I have ever visited. (Correct) 

4. Don’t use double comparative or double superlative.

Ex. He is the most wisest student in this class. (Incorrect)

He is the wisest student in this class. (Correct)

5. When two adjectives in superlative or comparative are used together, the one formed by adding ‘more’ or ‘most’, and other is formed by ‘er’ or ‘est’. Then ‘more’ or ‘most’ adjective will come after ‘er’ or ‘est’ adjective.

Ex. He is more intelligent and wiser than his brother. (Incorrect)

He is wiser and more intelligent than his brother. (Correct)

EXERCISE

Q.1. Neha is more honest than any member in her family

Q.2. I gave a little money I had in my pocket to the beggar.

Q.3. Arjun is smarter than wiser.

Q.4. She is one of the most unique persons in her family.

Q.5. Reena was the most wisest girl I had ever met in Delhi.

Q.6. I don’t have money enough to lend him.

Q.7. The foundation of my house is as strong as yours.

Q.8. She is junior than me.

Q.9. Mohan is seven years elder than his friend Pramod.

Q.10. My father prefer health more than wealth.


Answers :-

Ans 1: Use ‘any other member’

Ans 2: Use ‘the little money’

Ans 3: Use ‘more smart than wise’

Ans 4: Remove ‘most’

Ans 5: Remove ‘most’

Ans 6: Use ‘enough money’

Ans 7: Use ‘that of yours’

Ans 8: Use ‘to’ instead of ‘than’

Ans 9: “to” should replace “than” here.

Ans 10: “to” should replace “more than” here
