An old woman lived in Uttar Kashi at the foothill of the Himalayas. She had a big farm hence she needed many maid servants to work in it. There being a lot of work on the farm the maid servants were made to rise with the dawn.
The old woman had no alarm clock but she had a cock who who crowed at the crack of dawn. No sooner did the old woman hear the cock’s crow than she woke up her servants at four O’clock in the morning. This went on day after day. Her maid servants were lazy and resented the fact that daily their sleep was disturbed. After a long discussion of their problem they came to the conclusion that the cock was the cause of the problem.
So, they decided to kill the cock. They felt that once the cock was eliminated the old lady would sleep and so they would be left in peace, with nobody to disturb their sleep. But as the days spent by she lost count of time and woke the servants as soon as she was awaken which was generally between two O’ clock to three O’clock in the morning. Sometimes when her insomnia was bad, she even woke them at twelve O’clock in the night. Alas! The maid servants realised their mistake. At least when the cock was alive they were regularly woken up at four O’ clock in morning. They soon realised that wicked deeds bring their own punishment.
