Long, long ago, there lived a king who had a favourite jester in his court. The jester's business was to amuse the king and the courtiers. One day, however, the jester gave unintentional offence to the king. The king at once condemned him to death. The jester fell on his knees, and pleaded for his life. But the king refused to alter the sentence.
