Q.1-10. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain words are given in bold to help you locate them while answering some of the questions.

Seven-year-old Rohit was on his way to Mussoorie with his parents and was enjoying the panoramic beauty from the jeep. Suddenly, the jeep screeched to a halt. One of the tyres had a puncture.

His father told his mother, “Pass the tools. I will change the tyre.” They were both busy and they didn’t see Rohit walk away to pluck some wildflowers. Soon, both his pockets were full but as he turned to show it to his parents, he realised they were nowhere in sight. He had wandered too far.

He called out loudly, nobody replied. Scared, he began to cry. The shadows of the trees looked terrifying against the setting sun. Suddenly, he heard an elephant trumpet. He froze and a chill ran down his spine. A baby elephant walked out of the undergrowth and approached him.

Rohit mustered his courage and said, “My teacher told me that your name is Appu. Is that you, Appu?” The calf looked around and then lifted Rohit and placed him on his back. Rohit overcame his fear and patted him. Soon, they were by the road again and Rohitcould see his mother and father searching for him frantically. They saw Rohit and hugged him.

Rohit said happily, “Here is Appu, my friend, who saved my life.”

“Thanking you isn’t enough, Appu. We can never forget your kindness,” said his father, his eyes welling up. Rohit kissed Appu’s trunk and said, “I will come and see you soon.”

Years went by, and Rohit became a veterinary doctor. He never charged a fee to treat any animal from the circus or zoo.

One day, he got a call from the zoo. When he had finished his work he was just leaving the zoo, when he heard trumpeting. He asked the manager about the elephant and was told that the elephant had been rescued two days ago. “But the elephant is wild and fierce.”

“Don’t worry. Show me where he is,” said Rohit. The manager showed him the elephant. He saw that it had hurt its leg and trunk. The elephant walked towards him. Rohit was scared. But to his surprise, the elephant stopped and raised his trunk. At that instant, Rohit recognised him. It was Appu. He threw his arms around Appu’s trunk and hugged him. “What happened? Did he try to kill you?” the manager said breathlessly, running to his rescue. Rohit told him about Appu and how he treated Appu’s wounds. He promised to visit every day and make sure he was well looked after.
