Q. 3-10. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions given below it. Certain words have been printed in bold to help you locate them while answering some questions.

The increasing numbers of suicides among students at India’s premier technology institutes and schools, especially after or during the process of placements or examinations, are saddening indeed. The reasons are not being established in many of these instances. In a few cases it is clearly discernible that visions of a bleak future springing from immediate failures, especially at examinations or placements, may be behind young people taking such drastic steps. Suicides by students seem to be increasing by the day. Students must understand that setbacks at placements and examinations are not the end of the road or even an end in itself. When one window closes, new doors and vistas may open. Whenever thoughts of suicide surface in somebody’s mind, they should just think about their own parents. Do we want to leave them in tears? They will accept all our failures and successes — but not our shrouds. The suicide of a child will break them from the inside. We must banish all such thoughts the moment we find them entering our minds. Life’s landscape may seem to be an existential conundrum, even an arid wasteland. But we must learn to find the hidden oases. We must learn to overcome the fear of failure and even learn to fail with grace and courage of character. Look at me. I am learning to fail on a daily basis by writing letters to the editors of newspapers, and sending articles for publication, and hardly seeing them in print. I also failed in my second attempt to clear the civil services examination. But invariably I believe I have been learning a lot. Failure is not bad, rather it can be sweeter than success. Failing with perfection is as good as success. Since perfection is never achieved, the quest for it must go on. With failure as one’s best friend, one can hope to narrow the gap with perfection. Failure, somehow, understands perfection better, much better than success.
