Mathematician Robert Langlands wins 2018 Abel Prize.
Canadian mathematician Robert Langlands has been named as the winner of the Abel Prize for 2018 for his visionary programme connecting representation theory to number theory, by the Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters.
The 81-year-old mathematician would receive the financial award of six million Norwegian kroner ($776,000) from Norway's King Harald V at an award ceremony in Oslo on May 22.
Langlands was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada, in 1936. He graduated from the University of British Columbia with an undergraduate degree in 1957 and an MSc in 1958, and from Yale University of the US with a PhD in 1960.
He has held faculty positions at Princeton University and Yale University and is currently a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, the US.
The Abel prize has been awarded annually since 2003 to one or more outstanding mathematicians in memory of the Norwegian mathematics genius Niels Henrik Abel.

ICFRE Signed MOU With TIFAC for Supporting Forest Based Communities.
- The Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), Dehradun (an Autonomous Council under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change) and Technology Information, Forecasting & Assessment Council (TIFAC), New Delhi (an Autonomous Council under Department of Science and Technology) signed an MoU with an objective to provide livelihood opportunities and augment income of the forest based communities
- The MOU would also assist the industries to optimize the utilization of forest based resources with access of technology to different users.
- The MoU is valid for a period of 5 years and has the following salient features.
- Prioritization of technologies developed by ICFRE in consultation with stakeholders
- Creating patent awareness in the field of forestry and environment including wood science and allied subjects for ICFRE and its institutes
- Patent searching and filing in the field of Forestry and allied subjects
- Identifying technology gaps and commercialization of technologies
- Forest based technologies extension and transfer through stakeholder consultations
- Interaction with stakeholders on regular basis.
- The MOU was signed by Dr. S.C. Gairola, Director General, ICFRE, Dehradun and Dr. PrabhatRanjan, Executive Director, TIFAC, at Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), New Delhi.

Myanmar President U Htin Kyaw Resigned.
- Myanmar president U Htin Kyaw resigned on 21 March, 2018. A new leader would be selected within seven working days, in accordance with the country's 2008 Constitution.
- Kyaw became the first President of Myanmar with no ties to the army in more than 50 years. A close friend and confidant of the Nobel peace prize laureate Suu Kyi, Kyaw was hand-picked by her to run Myanmar's government because a Constitution drafted by the former junta barred the democracy champion from the top office.
- Kyaw, elected by the NLD-dominated Parliament in March 2016, ran a charity founded by Suu Kyi and has been a trusted member of her inner circle since the mid-1990s.

In 2011, the military junta was officially dissolved following a 2010 general election, and a nominally civilian government was installed.

Kidambi Srikanth and Somdev Devvarman felicitated with Padma Shri.
- Shuttler Kidambi Srikanth and former tennis player Somdev Devvarman were felicitated with the Padma Shri by President Ram Nath Kovind. The duo received the country’s fourth-highest civilian award, Padma Shri, in New Delhi. Srikanth is presently the World No 2 while Devvarman retired last year but after winning a gold medal for the country at the Asian Games. Besides Srikanth and Devvarman, India’s first Paralympic gold medallist, Murlikant Petkar also received the Padma Shri.
- Other athletes who were to be conferred with the awards were: former India cricket captain MS Dhoni, cueist Pankaj Advani, both to be bestowed with the third-highest civilian award in Padma Bhushan and weightlifter Saikom Mirabhai Chanu with the Padma Shri.

- पुरस्कार से सम्मानित अन्य एथलीट थे: पूर्व भारतीय क्रिकेट कप्तान एमएस धोनी, क्यूईस्ट पंकज आडवाणी, दोनों को तीसरे सबसे उच्च नागरिक पुरस्कार पद्म भूषण और भारोत्तोलक सैकोम मिराभाई चानू को पद्म श्री से सम्मानित किया गया।
