The SSC CGL exam is conducted every year to recruit candidates in various Grade B and C posts for multiple departments and ministries under the GOI. The SSC CGL exam pattern and syllabus are released by the authorities in the official notification.

SSC CGL Preparation Tips for Tier 1 Exam

1. General Intelligence & Reasoning: This section includes questions on verbal and non-verbal reasoning. The verbal section includes more questions as compared to the non-verbal section. Some of the important topics that students must emphasise include, Number Series, Similarities and Differences, Spatial Orientation, Visual Memory, Arithmetic Non-Verbal Series, Analogies, Space Visualisation, Decision-Making, Syllogistic Reasoning, Problem-Solving, Judgement, Coding and Decoding, Statement & Conclusion, etc.


2. General Awareness: This section tests the candidate's general knowledge and awareness of the surroundings. Topics usually included in this section are, History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, and General Policy & Scientific Research.


To prepare for this section, candidates are advised to read a newspaper every day to increase their general awareness. 


They should also read magazines, articles, and blogs on various websites to stay updated with the current happenings. Don't forget to make notes of important dates and events so you can revise them later. 


3. English Comprehension: This section tests the candidate's basic comprehension and writing skills. For the preparation of this section, aspirants must work on their vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension skills. They should read featured stories, opinion pieces, and editorials in the newspapers. 


4. Quantitative Aptitude: Quantitative Aptitude is the toughest and time-consuming section of this paper. This section will test your ability to solve questions quickly and appropriately. 


The important topics of this section include, Whole Numbers, Averages, Ratio & Proportion, Discount, Decimals & Fractions, Profit and Loss, Percentage, Interest, Square Roots, Time & Distance, Time & Work, geometrical problems, etc.


Candidates must focus on building their concepts and learning shortcuts and tricks to solve questions accurately but timely.

SSC CGL Preparation Tips for Tier 2 Exam


English Language and Comprehension

  • This paper has 200 questions, and the duration of the exam is 2 hours. One mark is awarded for every correct answer, and 0.25 marks will be deducted for every incorrect answer. 

  • The pattern of this paper is very similar to the Tier 1 exam, but the difficulty level is higher. 

  • Nearly 40-50% of questions are based on grammar, so if you work on the language, you'll clear this exam easily. 

  • Read newspapers regularly to improve your vocab and grammar. Solve various grammar questions from the books and practice previous year's questions.


Statistics

  • The paper consists of 100 questions, and the exam duration is 2 hours. Two marks will be awarded for every correct answer, while a 0.5 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

  • The important topics include Collection, Measures of Central Tendency; Measures of Dispersion Moments, Correlation and Regression; Skewness and Kurtosis; Probability Theory; Statistical Inference; Sampling Theory; Analysis of Variance; Time Series Analysis and Index Numbers.


General Studies (Finance and Economics)

  • This paper consists of 100 questions of 2 marks each, and the exam duration is 2 hours. 0.5 mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer.

  • This paper does not require any cramming or formulas, tricks, or vocabulary. It is easy to learn and score in this paper.

  • Candidates must learn definitions and concepts related to Indian and World economies. 

  • Candidates must know about basic topics of Class 11th and 12th like, national income and aggregates, supply and demand, the balance of payment, foreign exchange demand, economic development, and national and international financial institutions.

  • The General Awareness segment holds the maximum weightage in this paper. Around 3-5 questions are asked from this section. Some of the important topics from which 7-8 questions are asked include:

  • Five Year Plans

  • Money and Banking

  • Indian Tax Structure

  • Economic Terms

  • Economic Reforms in India


SSC CGL Preparation Tips: Tier 3


1. SSC CGL Tier 3 is a subjective paper that tests the candidate's ability to manage official communication and correspondence. Candidates are required to write an Essay/Precis/Letter /Application in the examination. 


2. This exam will test your writing skills, for which you need to practice a lot. The more you write, the better you get.


3. Good content and the ability to provide a proper structure to content are essential elements in writing a letter or an essay. 


4. Read the newspaper to understand a better way of writing and be updated with the latest happenings. Analyze how the paragraphs are connected to each other and what form of writing the editor has chosen. 


5. Refer to a book with plenty of essays as it will provide good content and improve your vocabulary.


SSC CGL Preparation Tips: Tier 4


1. Shortlisted candidates after the declaration of the Tier 3 result will be called for the skill test of the SSC CGL selection process. SSC CGL skill test comprises two types of tests, i.e., Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) and Data Entry Skill Test (DEST).


2. The candidates need to appear for any one of them based on the posts they have applied for.


3. CPT includes the 3 modules, Word Processing, Spreadsheet, and Generation of Slides.


4. DEST includes the typing test wherein candidates need to make 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes. It is a speed test that can be cleared without a hitch with regular practice.
