Math Tricks for Fast Calculations in SSC

With the increasing competition in SSC exams, you have to focus more on some crucial areas to move ahead of your competitors. We all know that time management is vital to crack any competitive exam, and Quantitative Aptitude is one such section that requires the most speed and accuracy.

With Quantitive Aptitude, you have to be determinant and confident as this section is all about patience and mental ability. But students often struggle to attempt maximum questions in QA in the given time period. The only solution to maximize your attempts in the exam is by improving your mathematical calculations.

Quantitative Aptitude can be the most scoring subject if prepared well and attempted within the given time period. So, in this article, we'll discuss some tricks for fast calculation in Maths so you can qualify for this section and score maximum marks in it.

How to Improve Your Maths Calculation Speed?

A good hold over calculation speed will decrease the time spent on each question. So work on your basic calculations and make all areas of Quant easier and quicker to solve. You can find below the list of essential things you need to learn in order to improve your calculations:

  • Calculate in your head. Do the simple calculations like additions, subtraction, multiplications in your head to save your time. But don't get tense and calculate in a hurry; otherwise, you'll get the wrong answer.

  • Learn tables at least from 1-30, squares up to 30, and cubes up to 20. This will increase your calculation speed exponentially.

  • Look for videos on YouTube for shortcut tricks for Maths calculations and try to use them while solving questions.

  • Use SSC Math formulas and identities in the questions to increase the speed.

  • Practice fast calculations regularly while solving questions. Start easy and gradually.

Here are the details about the above calculation tricks:

Take Speed Tests

The more you work with numbers, the more you'll be able to solve quickly. Start with simple additions and subtractions to ensure your fundamentals are solid.

  • There are many speed tests online; solve them regularly until you find your speed is increased. Solve at least 50 basic problems regularly.

  • If you're solving offline sheets, you should set a timer and complete the worksheet within the time period.

  • With time, also aim for accuracy. It’s because, in the end, you have to focus on how fast you can get the right answers.

Memorize Multiplication Tables

In elementary school, you were required to memorize the tables from 0 to 20. But with time, students tend to forget tables from 15-20, so you need to revise them again and learn them thoroughly.

Memorizing tables will help you solve the multiplications in mind and significantly speed up your calculations.

  • Rather than printing out the tables, create a table chart of your own. The practice of writing the tables will help you memorize them sooner. Write them out at least 6 times before sticking one of the sheets in your room.

  • Keep learning the tables until you remember what is 27*9 in your mind.

  • You can find multiplication speed tests similar to the addition and subtraction tests online and also their worksheets. After learning the tables, attempt sufficient timed tests.

Take the Help of Tables for Division

  • Try out some division tests next, using the tables to find the answer. You should not have to work out the Math and solve the division on paper involving 0-20 tables.

  • Knowing the tables by heart will also help you recognize when a number is not evenly divisible. For example, when you see 143/16, you'll know that it is not completely divisible, as 144 is divisible by 16. Since the numerator is slightly off, you will not waste your time dividing it.

  • Knowing that 143 is smaller than 16*9, will help you realize that the answer will be slightly less than 9.

Solve Previous Years’ Papers

The SSC course is quite extensive, and questions can be asked from any topic, so it is important for students to know the exam pattern and the type of questions asked in the exam. Previous years’ papers will also help aspirants to revise and complete the paper within the time limit.
