The SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL) is a (10+2) level exam conducted to recruit candidates for the posts of Lower Division Clerk (LDC), Postal Assistants/ Sorting Assistants (PA/SA), Data Entry Operator (DEO) across several central government departments and ministries.

English Language

  • Solve at least one reading comprehension every day as it is a vital part of the English section.

  • For the cloze test, try to find the logic behind the passage and the most suitable phrase for the blank. If you fill one blank correctly, this will help you find the rest of the answers. 

  • Read the passage first and then glance at the questions. Thereafter, move back to find answers to the questions. This way, it can be done quickly. 

  • Memorize a new set of words every day and note down their synonyms and antonyms so that you can revise them.

  • It is crucial to understand the basic rules of grammar to get a good score in this section.

  • Read a newspaper every day to improve your vocabulary and reading ability. 

General Intelligence and Reasoning

  • To ace this section, candidates should work on their speed and accuracy.

  • Keep practicing the number games and puzzles to get habituated with various types of questions. 

  • When you pick a topic, keep practicing different questions till you're fluent with them. 

  • Practice SSC CHSL mock tests and previous years’ papers more often to get the hang of the paper pattern.

Quantitative Aptitude

  • Memorize the tables up to 30, and cubes & squares up to 25.  

  • Learn all the formulas as per the SSC CHSL syllabus.

  • Learn simple shortcuts and tricks to solve the questions in a timely manner. 

  • While practicing, do mental calculations and avoid calculators.

SSC CHSL: Tier 2 Preparation Tips

SSC CHSL Tier 2 is a descriptive type test where candidates have to write the answers in the sheet provided. Hence, candidates are advised to practice answer writing to clear this exam.  


  • Candidates are advised to read editorials from reputed newspapers to develop critical thinking skills and vocabulary.

  • Aspirants should be in sync with the current events happening in society.

  • Make sure you don't make any grammatical mistakes in your writing.

  • For static topics, candidates are suggested to read SSC CHSL preparation books and practice questions in them.

  • For the dynamic part, candidates must read the newspapers, form questions from the articles, and try to answer them. 

  • Avoid exceeding the word limit of the essay and letter.

  • Avoid repeating the information throughout the writing and focus on your neat handwriting.

  • The candidates can be asked to write on the topics related to National Interest, Ecological, Finance & Economy, Issues, Politics, Social Issues, Schemes, Governance, etc.


SSC CHSL: Tier 3 Preparation Tips

This exam is qualifying in nature. It is conducted to test the basic computing skills of the candidates.

  • Candidates are advised to keep working on their typing speed to clear this test. 

  • Data Entry Operators (DEO)— 8000 key depressions per hour on the computer.

  • PA and Court Clerks Candidates— English medium typing speed of 35 words per minute. (For the candidates who opted for English Medium)

  • PA and Court Clerks Candidates— Hindi typing speed of 30 words per minute. (For the candidates who opted for Hindi Medium)

  • Candidates should practice on a desktop instead of a laptop as they will be provided with the desktop for testing typing speed.
