Afghanistan

India and Afghanistan have good connections and cooperate in commercial, technical, and cultural spheres. India is the largest regional investor in Afghanistan's reconstruction.

Infrastructure development, institutional capacity building, modest development projects, and food security support in the form of regular wheat deliveries to Afghanistan are among India's aid programs for Afghanistan. Over 10,000 Afghan students have studied in India on ICCR scholarships since 2001.

The cornerstone of mutual trust has been built on the foundation of history. Afghanistan's public opinion polls back this up, as do Afghans' feelings about feeling at home when they visit India.

Bangladesh

Bangladesh and India have a long history together. The Indian government is committed to maintaining positive relations with its neighbours. Bangladesh is one of the country's immediate neighbours. Bangladesh had been recognized as a separate and independent country by India. In 1971, India fought alongside Bangladeshis to free Bangladesh from West Pakistan.

Bangladesh also offers India a transit route to its North-East states via Bangladesh.

Bhutan

In the past, India and Bhutan have had good relations, which have recently been enhanced. The two countries have progressed due to their economic cooperation. Bhutan has benefited from India's assistance in telecommunications, hydrographic survey, education, and forestry.

It is estimated that India is a long-term business partner and development partner of Bhutan.

China

India has a close relationship with China. India and China's rising economic reliance has brought the two countries closer administratively.

High-level representatives and ministers visit both countries regularly. Tibet was formally recognized as a part of China by India in 2003, while Sikkim was recognized as an official part of India by China in 2004.

Myanmar

Following Burma's independence from the United Kingdom in 1948, India maintained political ties with the country. Burma is located in Northeast India to the south of the states of Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, and Arunachal Pradesh, and its proximity to the People's Republic of China lends Indo-Burmese ties strategic importance. Burma is one of India's friendly neighbours, sharing a long and tense border. The two countries' relations have been cordial.

Nepal

Nepal is a friendly Indian neighbour as well. It has a border with five Indian states – Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand – in the east, south, and west, and with the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China in the north. There has long been a tradition of unrestricted cross-border migration. Nepal has a population of 29 million people and covers an area of 147,181 square kilometers. Most of India's and Nepal's relations are founded on centuries of traditional cultural ties.

Pakistan

India and Pakistan have a tumultuous relationship. When it comes to preserving relations with India, Pakistan has been unfriendly. On the other hand, India has made significant efforts to improve and stabilize relations with Pakistan.

Several confidence-building measures (CBMs) have been implemented to start the peace process between India and Pakistan.

Maldives

India and the Maldives have maintained friendly relations since 1981 when they signed a commercial deal to export essential commodities. In the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is located south of India's Lakshadweep Islands. India and the Maldives, as friendly neighbours, have long-standing ethnic, linguistic, cultural, religious, and commercial ties and enjoy cordial and multi-dimensional relations. India has assured the Maldives of its complete support and aid in its economic development.

Sri Lanka

India and Sri Lanka have traditionally been close allies. In Sri Lanka, there are many Tamils who are of Indian descent. This resulted in a cultural divide in Sri Lanka. India-Sri Lanka ties have changed dramatically throughout the years. Political and commercial ties are strong, and there has been progress in all areas of bilateral collaboration.

In South Asia, Sri Lanka is India's largest trading partner. In turn, India is Sri Lanka's greatest trading partner globally. After the India-Sri Lanka, Free Trade Agreement went into effect in March 2000, trade between the two countries developed very quickly.

Summing Up!

India would like a calm, prosperous neighbourhood that is sensitive to its own needs and desires. India is a vast country with a diverse cultural landscape. It has a great reputation in Southeast Asia. As a result of India's tremendous cultural advancements, the country has maintained cordial relations with its neighbours. These neighbouring countries have cordial historical, religious, economic, ethnic, and linguistic ties with India.

However, from the beginning of its independence, India's fundamental concerns have been the promotion of internal cohesion and the management of its frequently tumultuous relations with its neighbours, the two of which are often interconnected, as in the case of Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. Though various confrontations have arisen in the past, India's government leaders and citizens constantly hope for peaceful relations with its neighbours.
