SSC CHSL Job Structure, Salary, and Other Perks

The jobs offered by the Staff Selection Commission are indeed one of the most lucrative jobs in the country. Every year millions of aspirants apply for this job. Though the preparation is intense and the screening process is quite challenging, the SSC CHSL job profile is worth it. Like most other government jobs, SSC CHSL jobs also revise salary after every pay commission report. Through the SSC CHSL examination, recruitments are made for various posts such as Lower Division Clerk (LDL), Postal Assistants, Data Entry Operator, etc. The SSC CHSL conducts a recruitment examination, and based on the results, they publish merit lists and shortlist candidates for the job.


Salary Structure of the SSC CHSL Jobs


The SSC CHSL starting salary is 19,900 INR. This is a revised SSC CHSL salary scale after the reports of the 7th Pay Commission. This amount is higher than the previous pay scale as there has been a hike of almost 25 percent in the SSC CHSL salary after the 7th Pay Commission reports. Not only does the SSC CHSL job provide a handsome salary, but there are various other benefits that SSC CHSL job holders enjoy. Such perks and benefits include:


  • Transport Allowance

  • Dearness Allowance

  • House Rent 

  • Special Allowance 


The SSC CHSL salary structure is decided post-wise. The various posts, according to their ascending levels of salary structure, are


  • Lower Divisional Clerk (LDC)

  • Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA)

  • Postal Assistant (PA)

  • Sorting Assistant (SA)

  • Data Entry Operator (Pay Level 4)

  • Data Entry Operator (Pay Level 5)

  • DEO (Grade A)


The basic salary received by the LDC candidates is 19,900 INR, whereas the salary of grade A recruits may be somewhere close to 25 500 INR - 81 100 INR. 


Other Important Information

The basic pay scale is 19,900 INR for LDC and 25,500 INR for Grade A candidates. Apart from this basic scale, there are various allowances as follows: 


  • HRA of 8% - 24 %

  • DA of 17 %

  • Travel Allowance 


These allowances vary according to the cities of job posts. There are three categories of cities - City X, City Y, and City Z. The perks and allowances for City X are the highest, followed by City Y and City Z. City X refers to those cities where the population is more than 50 lakhs, City Y is those where the population is between 5 - 50 lakhs, and City Z is those where the population is less than five lakhs. These allowances are pretty high, and millions of students take up intense SSC CHSL preparation to secure an SSC CHSL job. 


Taking these figures into account, the SSC CHSL in-hand salary according to the city of residence goes something like this:

When talking about the benefits and the perks, it is also essential to talk about the deductions in the salary of the SSC CHSL jobholders. Some amount of the money that these job holders receive is also deducted under the following criteria:


  • NPS (10 % of Basic Pay + DA)

  • CGEGIS

  • CGHS


The rates of each of these deduction scales are dedicated based on the city that the job holder is posted in. For example, the travel allowance will be higher in Category X cities, followed by categories Y and Z. 


The house rent allowance is a reimbursement amount provided to the jobholders. The HRA rates vary based on the category of the city the job holder is posted in. 


While the HRA and TA vary according to city categories, the Dearness Allowance remains constant, 17 % of the basic pay. Apart from these, Leave Travel Concession and various other allowances also form an integral part of the salary structure of the SSC CHSL jobs. Through all these perks and benefits and a respectable salary scale, the government tries to ensure the status of the SSC CHSL jobs and makes sure that the job holders can comfortably carry out the duties assigned to them.
