RBI Grade B Syllabus and Exam Pattern 2022

If you know any central bank exam syllabus in India, the RBI exam syllabus will not seem much different. Instead, it is almost aligned with other major bank exam syllabi. 

Before we start discussing the syllabus, it is essential to know a few basic things about the Exam:


  • The RBI Grade B exam is an online examination conducted by the Reserve Bank of India.

  • The mode of the exam is online.

  • The marking pattern is +1 for correct answers and - 0.25 for incorrect answers.


There are three phases of the selection process:


Phase 1: Objective written exam

Phase 2: Objective and subjective written exam

Phase 3: Interview Phase


RBI Grade B Officer Syllabus

There are four primary sections that a candidate has to prepare for in Phase I of the RBI Grade B exam Syllabus. These are the English Language, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, and General Awareness. The Phase II exam includes the sections economics and social sciences, English, and Finance and Management. Each of the RBI exam syllabus sections has a vast number of topics under them. We shall discuss the syllabus and exam pattern in the subsequent sections. 


RBI Grade B Preliminary Exam Pattern

Before appearing for the Grade B Prelims exam, you need to know the RBI Grade B Paper pattern. Let us first understand a few key points regarding the Prelims exam:

The total marks allotted for the prelims exam is 200, while the total time duration of the exam is 120 minutes.


Candidates must secure minimum pass marks for each category to clear the Prelims. That means a candidate must secure minimum marks in each section of English Language, General Awareness, Quant, and Reasoning to pass the exam. 


Along with securing minimum qualifying marks in each section, the candidate must secure minimum aggregate marks for the exam.

Structure of the Phase I Exam 

The preliminary exam for the RBI Grade B mostly aims at evaluating the candidate’s general reasoning and aptitude capabilities. Sections for English and general awareness are also included for evaluating the language skills and the general knowledge of the candidate in various aspects.

RBI Grade B Phase 1 Syllabus

The prelims exam will comprise the four main sections as described above. The important topics included in each section of the RBI Grade B Phase I Syllabus  are as follows:

RBI Grade B Phase 2 Exam Pattern

This is also known as the Mains exam. The total marks for the RBI Grade B Phase 2 exam or the Mains exam are 300. Usually, it consists of 3 papers designated as Paper I, Paper-II, and Paper-II, respectively. Only the candidates who have secured qualifying marks in the phase 1 exam and are shortlisted can appear for the phase 2 exams. The RBI exam board shall decide the cut-off marks for qualification in the Prelims exams.

Phase 2 Exam Pattern


The phase 2 exam pattern is as follows:


Paper-I - Economics and Social Issues

Maximum Marks - 100

Total Duration 120 minutes

50 % objective questions and 50% subjective questions

Paper-II - English (Writing Skills)

Maximum Marks - 100

Total Duration - 90 minutes

3 questions all of which are descriptive 

Paper-III - Finance and Management

Maximum Marks- 100

Total Duration - 120 minutes

50 % objective questions and 50% subjective questions

Final Phase - Interview

The interview is the terminal phase of the RBI exam, consisting of 75 marks. A candidate who qualifies in both the prelims and the mains exam is eligible for the RBI Grade B interview phase, the last phase of selection. The board prepares the final merit list based on the total marks obtained by an applicant in the main and the interview phases.
