Discrimination For SSC and Railways Exams

Anonymous

One very common question type asked in the SSC Railway Recruitment examination is ‘Discrimination’. This is one area that can boost your scores phenomenally if you get them right. This is the precise reason why candidates target this section of questions. It is a sub-category included in the reasoning section. Before attempting the discrimination questions, you must thoroughly go through the syllabus of this section. Along with the syllabus, it is also important to practice mock tests that will assist you greatly in cracking discrimination reasoning questions.

Discrimination Reasoning Questions

Discrimination Reasoning questions are a part of almost every competitive exam, be it the SSC Railway Job, Bank PO, IBPS Clerk, LIC, AAO, and various other exams. We will now look at the most commonly asked discrimination reasoning types of questions:

Shape

Tasks

Triangles

Triangles are the most common type of questions asked in the discrimination type questions. Usually, the question asks to count the number of triangles. The question can also ask to count the number of various types of triangles hidden in an equilateral triangle.

Rectangle

A figure shall be provided with many rectangles. Usually, there are 2 main types of questions that are asked from the Rectangle type of questions:

  1. The total number of rectangles that are in the given figure

  2. The number of smaller rectangles that are embedded in the large rectangle

Square

A figure will be provided with multiple squares. The figure shall be tricky and complex. It will contain many squares interlinked with each other. The candidate has to find out the total number of squares in the figure.

Tips and Hacks to Solve Discrimination Observation Reasoning

The questions under this section may seem increasingly tough to the candidates, but if you follow certain tricks and hacks, it will become easier. Candidates can solve the questions easily in the SSC railway exam when they follow these tips

Rectangle Type Questions

This is one of the easiest types of discrimination reasoning questions asked in various exams. The first step in solving rectangle-type discrimination questions is to number the rows and columns. Number the rows serially, and then do the same thing to the columns.

Suppose the number of rows in the rectangle given in the question is 4, then add the row numbers like 1+2+3+4 = 10. Now do the same thing for the columns. Suppose the number of columns in the rectangle given in the question is 5.

Add the columns as 1+2+3+4+5 = 15. The next step is to multiply the two sums that you got by adding the number of rows and columns. That means, in this example, it would be 10*15 =150. So, 150 rectangles are embedded in the rectangle of the figure that has 4 rows and 5 columns. You can apply this same hack for any type of rectangle questions that are asked.

Square Type Questions

This is a bit more complex than the rectangle-type questions, but with the hack given below, it will be pretty simple to calculate. Let us examine the example of a square that has an equal number of rows and columns. Then, your first step will be to take a square of the number of rows and columns like 12+22+32+42. The result is 1+4+9+16 = 30. So, the number of squares will be 30.

Now, in case the number of grids is not identical, it means instead of being a 4*4 or 5*5 square, it is a 4*5 square. In that case, you have to apply another trick. In a 4*5 grid, there will be 30 squares for sure (we have already calculated it for a 4*4 grid, and a 4*4 grid square is embedded within a 4*5 grid square). Hence, in this case, the answer will be 30+5+4+3+2+1 = 45
