  • Introduction
In January 1985 Railway Service Commissions have been renamed as Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs). In the year 1998, all RRBs came under the control of the Railway Recruitment Control Board (RRCB), which was set up in the Ministry of Railways (Railway Board) to coordinate and streamline the working of RRBs. Thus at present 21 Railway Recruitment Boards are functioning.


  • Objectives of Railway Recruitment Control Board

The recruitment boards have been set up based on the policies evolved over a period of time to achieve the following objectives:
  • To rationalize the work load on existing RRBs.
  • To Expedite selection process
  • To bring the recruitment agencies nearer to the candidates in the far flung areas and interior sides.
  • To conduct recruitment on all India basis.


  • Exam Pattern
Stage-I : Preliminary Examination

The standard of questions for the single stage CBT (Computer Based Test) will be generally in conformity with the educational standards prescribed for the posts. The questions will be of objective type with multiple choices and are likely to include questions pertaining to General awareness, Arithmetic, General Intelligence and Reasoning. The Question paper for single stage CBT will be of 90 minutes duration for 100 questions.
There shall be negative marking in CBT (Computer Based Test)/ Examination and marks shall be deducted for each wrong answer @ 1 /3 of the marks allotted for each question.


Stage-II -Mains Examination
RRBs will hold a 2nd stage Computer Based Test (CBT) for various NTPC (Graduate) category posts.2nd stage CBT is likely to include questions pertaining to General Awareness, Arithmetic, General Intelligence and Reasoning. The duration of 2nd stage CBT will be of 90 minutes covering 120 multiple choice objective questions.


  • Final Selection
Final selection of candidates will be based on merit position obtained in the 2nd stage CBT and/or result of Aptitude Test/Typing Skill Test wherever applicable.Normalisation of marks will be done as per extant rules in 1st and 2nd stage CBT


  • Eligibility criteria
AGE LIMIT: The lower and upper age limit indicated for a particular post(s) in the vacancy table will be reckoned as on 01.01.2016. The upper age limit is relaxable as under, subject to submission of requisite certificates: By 5 years for SC/ST candidates.

  • By 3 years for OBC candidates.
  • No age relaxation is allowed to SC/ST/OBC candidates applying against unreserved vacancies.
  • ForEx-Servicemen, up to the extent of service rendered in Defence, plus 3 years, provided they have put in more than 6 months service after attestation.
  •  By 5 years for candidates who have ordinarily been domiciled in the State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from 01.01.1980 to 31.12.1989.
  •  By 10 years for UR Persons with Disabilities (PWD), 13 years for OBC Persons with Disabilities and 15 years for SC&ST Persons with Disabilities (PWD).
  •  Upper age limit in case of widows, divorced women and women judicially separated from husband but not remarried shall be 35 years for Unreserved, 38 years for OBC and 40 years for SC/ST candidates.
  •  For serving Group "C" and erstwhile Group 'D' Railway Staff, Casual Labour and Substitutes, the upper age limit will be up to 40 years for Unreserved candidates, 45 years for SC/ST candidates and 43 years for OBC candidates, provided they have put in a minimum of 3 years service (continuous or in broken spells). For those working in Quasi-Administrative offices of the Railway organization such as Railway Canteens, Co-operative Societies and institutes, the relaxation in upper age limit will be up to the length of service rendered, subject to a maximum of 5 years.

  • Educational Qualification 
Candidates should have requisite Educational qualifications (as indicated in the vacancy table) from recognized Board/University /Institute, including degrees obtained through non formal/distance education, provided he/she has completed 12 years of schooling through an Examination conducted by a Board/University OR has passed an entrance test conducted by the University AND is not below 18 years of age on 1st July of the year of admission to the course AND the degree so obtained is of 3 years duration as on the date of submission of the ONLINE application for this Centralized Employment Notice. Those awaiting results of the final examination need NOT apply.

Reasoning section is an important part of RRB. One of the most essential aspects in theReasoning Syllabus is divided into two parts verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning questions. Check details about the verbal reasoning & logical reasoning.

  • Verbal Reasoning Topics 

Number series, Letter & symbol series, Statement, and argument,Logical Reasoning problems, Alphabet test, Passage, and conclusions, Blood relations, Direction sense test, Input output, Coding-decoding, Number Ranking, Making judgments, etc.
  •  Non-Verbal Reasoning Topics 

 Making series/analogy, Classification, Series test, Odd figures, Miscellaneous test, etc.

  • Arithmetic 

 Percentages, Time & Distance, Interest,  Simplification,  Time & Work,  Pipes & Cisterns,
 Profit and Loss,  Averages,  Problems on Ages,  Data Interpretation  Boats & Streams etc.

  • General Awareness 

General Awareness section of RRB Exam contains various topics such as current affairs questions, Indian Railway istory questions and common general knowledge questions. Major topics are :
